About St Joseph’s

Welcome

from St Joseph's Church

We’re a thriving church made up of people from many different walks of life, ages and nationalities – who by the grace of God and through the work of the Holy Spirit, are seeking to know Jesus and make him known.

We love Benwell and the North East, and are committed to serving this area – reaching out with the good news and love of Jesus Christ, growing as disciples and seeking to care for needs.

Our main gatherings are our Sunday services at 10.30am and 6.30pm each week, but we also have events for all ages throughout the week. Everyone is welcome – whether you are a Christian looking for a church or you are someone exploring whether there’s a God. We love meeting new people and we look forward to welcoming you. If there is anything you want to know beforehand, just get in touch.

We’re a gospel church, a Bible church and an Anglican church. You can find out more about what we believe here.

Our Story

The St Joseph’s building was first opened in 1931 and remained in use by the Roman Catholic Church until its closure in February 2013. In November 2013, the building was purchased by the Jesmond Trust on behalf of Jesmond Parish Church (JPC), with a vision to start a new evangelical church to serve Benwell and the west of the city.

We are grateful to our brothers and sisters at JPC for providing vision, funding and the launch team to get St Joseph’s off the ground. In January 2014, work began to renovate the building, and weekly services began at the start of 2016.

We thank God that the church has grown since then – we’ve grown in love for the Lord and for one another. We’ve also grown in numbers and we’ve grown in the variety of different ministry and activities going on.

Our Vision

Our vision is the same now as it was when we started – to reach out with the good news and love of Jesus Christ, to grow as disciples, and to care for needs in our community.

To achieve this aim we became part of the Anglican Mission in England. You can find out more about our connections here.

We also actively support this mission in other parts of the UK and the wider world – including in Spain, the Balkans, Mozambique and South Sudan. You can find out more about our mission partners here.

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

Matthew 28:18–20
